"Don't Let the Cat Out of the Bag in The Leave It to Beamer series, written and illustrated by Clay Boura, is a delightfully creative explanation of the frightful confusion of our English language. Idioms such as “don’t let the cat out of the bag,” “go out on a limb,” “leave you in stitches,” and “head over heels” are more properly illustrated by Beamer’s “off the top of his head” narratives. As a former English teacher, this reviewer is well aware of the unfairness of the conformities of our language. Idioms can be fun, though, if presented in a creative manner as Clay Boura has proven.

This is an outstanding book, the illustrations are beautiful and eye catching for a child to say the least. Here is how I plan on using the series as a parent.
1. Teaching creative and abstract thinking. I think the lessons contained in the pages help parents teach kids that language is a tool, and that words can have different meanings so it is important to look at the underlying purpose of statements
2. Emotional IQ. If you understand the meaning behind words, or how people are using them to describe situations and especially influence other people, make sure it passes your value system before allowing it to affect the value systems you already have in place. An unfortunate thing I see in people my age is inability to think for themselves, and over reliance on media sources for opinions. I don't believe this is a good thing, and this book series helps build a foundation for checks and balances.
My thanks to the author

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is such an imaginative way of exploring the meaning of words and phrases. The pictures make it a lot of fun too. I actually can't wait for the next book to see which idiom Beamer tackles next! I definitely recommend this book -- kids love it!

Never really put much thought into idioms so when the author asked us to review I was like sure.
K is learning about idioms in class right now so I knew he would really enjoy this.
In Don't Let the Cat out of the bag we see how Beamer's imagination comes into play when his mom says to him "Don't Let the Cat out of the Bag."
At the end of the story we get how the idiom originated which was really neat information as I never thought about how it came to be.
Now K said he liked the book but that the eyes of the family were really creepy and he wouldn't look at the page. This is coming from a 9 year old. K also said that from now on we will use this idiom when we are getting presents for people so we don't have to use the word secret.

A FUN STORY ABOUT IDIOMS FOR KIDS! This is a fun story to introduce children to English idioms. In the book, young Beamer is confused when his mother tells him not to let the cat out of the bag. Beamer wonders what the heck that could possibly mean! So he comes up with his own wild tale to fit the words in the idiom, before he finally asks his mother to explain. She lets him in on the real meaning of the phrase and Beamer leaves us with the thought that grown-ups say strange things.
There is interesting end matter that explains what an idiom is and how this particular idiom came about.
Boura writes with a clear, fun tone and his illustrations contain some humorous little details that will appeal to kids and adults alike. A great series idea to help kids start to analyze and understand English language.
The print book itself is very high quality. Sturdy pages and a strong hardcover. This book can be enjoyed over and over again without falling apart. It's also formatted perfectly to sit on the shelves of a library or bookstore.
Nicely done.
